For example, there will be a lot of exposure of good employers, to encourage others to participate. I want to ensure young people who should do apprenticeships have the opportunity to do them.
But it warned that mounting uncertainty over Government-funded training budgets for vital skills was putting these plans at risk, and could leave companies short of the skills they need to take advantage of the economic upturn. It said a survey of nearly companies showed that 55 per cent of manufacturers were concerned about their ability to attract and retain skilled employees in preparation for the recovery. The group is urging the Government to clarify the funding that will be available for vital skills programmes, including apprenticeships, beyond the end of this year.

A government pledge to end age discrimination in skills training is held up by a Whitehall funding row, it has emerged. It is now over a year since Charles Clarke, Education and Skills Secretary, promised publicly funded apprenticeships for overs. But business organisations are now concerned that the fine words have not been supported by any new money.
