Backed by a delightfully nasty ad campaign and the promise of X-rated directors cuts with CGI-inserted porn star naughty bits, sitting down to watch his four-hour tragic genital odyssey brings a certain level of nausea along with it. Even as someone who admires and trusts Von Trier, you had to feel nervous about whether or not this experiment would work. The film was originally supposed to be only one complete entry; but, because of its multiple hour length, von Trier made the decision to split the project into two separate films. It was nominated for the Nordic Council Film Prize. Nymphomaniac is the third and final installment in von Trier's unofficially titled Depression Trilogyhaving been preceded by Antichrist and Melancholia.
